Do you want your next triathlon swim to be smooth and effortless? Check out GTN's tips on how to train like a pro in the pool...

- Structured sessions - Each session should have a focus. Including one aerobic, one speed and one threshold session per week will lead to a greater improvement than steady swimming.

- Technical Analysis - Get a friend or coach to film you and someone to analyse your stroke will help prevent forming bad habits. Regular drills will help reinforce good technique, especially if done at the end of a session.

- Breathing - practise breathing bilaterally help keep your stroke symmetrical however it is okay to breathe every two to prevent swimming hypoxic.

- Open Water Skills - Practise open water skills such as sighting, swimming in a group and swimming without touching the wall.

- Drafting - This is a skill that needs practising and can be done in the pool with familiar swimmers.

Heather should've done the demo in the tumble turn video that one fly kick we saw looked badass

Tri Man

Hi, with two swiming sessions per week, should I always do a ... session + changing the type of the second one every week ?
always do a ... and a ... session every week ? or equally rotate between dift types of sessions every week ? thx

Mew Twaila

"not everyone has time for three or four swims per week"
... I'm a beginner but my schools swim team has us practice 6 days out of 7 ??

I'm so nervous I start my first practice tomorrow

Patrick Remmen

How to determine your swim threshold speed? As training on heartrate in the water tends to pretty to impossible ;-). Just go by CSS?

rpx1979

Great swimmers and awesome video! Heather's arms are crossing the midline sometimes?

Respectable Bogan

20-30km lol. Don't mean to blow my own trumpet but I'm not even pro and I do 35-40

Surya Vanamali

Blimey! Did he say pros swim 20 - 30 km a week? That's almost my running mileage!

Adderall

first XD

WaterCube

That right hand though... :) https://ibb.co/gKtvJa

Nicole Bench

Where's that swimming pool? It looks really nice

Florian Schmidt

and i cant crawl for 25m :/

Tonytruand09

Thanks guys!

Jarne De Prins

what I always like to do is a 200m block(in a 25m pool!!), and then go slow for 10m, sprint 15m, go slow for 15m, sprint for 10m, and so on(in my pool it is done easylice because of the flags above the pool), that way you learn to sprint really fast, without being able to push of a wall

gibbon douglas

Why would you take it for granted the everyone knows what “drafting” means?

Nigelv

My favorite swim session is when I turn up to the pool and it's closed so I go for a bike ride :) jokes I actually find programmed sessions based on leaving times the most effective.

DelTorres

Perfect, just came back from cleaning my bike for the saturday race - and the newest GTN video is available.

Global Triathlon Network

Speed or technique session? Let us know your preference in the comments below ?

Danimator 29

So don’t breathe every stroke? I’m having issues with that

Kevin Chinchilla

Muy buenos los concejos saludos desde Costa Rica !

tomáš Repka

more technique sessions.... Thx.

Rob Kennedy

Great Channel well done keep the great work coming love watching at the end of a day

Craig Orrell

How many sessions would you recommend for a returning swimmer to sharpen up the techniques. Would you also mix in some back stroke etc if you're feeling tired as a active recovery to build endurance?

Keep up the great content

Michael McDermott

Mark, I am an idiot. Know this.
I notice your fingers are slightly open on the stroke, is this deliberate?

Fionn Brennan

Great tips guys and brilliant videos

tall paul

Be nice to be able to film ur technique but unless ur in a private pool it's just not allowed in the uk!

Mehdi B

@ #Heather , wondering if you swim TI ? And do you recommend for beginner swimmers ? Thanks

Stephen Jones

It may well be true that pros won't improve their swim much by focusing on their technique but that's because for them there may not be much room for improvement in this area. For your average age grouper however, focusing on technique probably offers the biggest opportunity for improvement. More broadly, don't train like a pro if you aren't one. Train in a way that is specific and appropriate for you and your level.

Kory Stotesbery

How about a dedicated video to drafting in a race? How to pick a person to draft, how to (or if to) get rid of someone on your hip, what changes you make to breathing or sighting when drafting.

Achim Edes

"Open water facilities" aka. "lakes"

Corey Mcniel

Just look for Unflexal workouts. There is all you need about workouts :)

Jackie au

she would swim quite a bit faster with the proper catch, as a swimmer and collegiate water polo player, the catch is where most of my power comes from and pulling across ur body is bad news bears

forestboy52

A vid on dealing with open water anxiety and swimming at your own pace when surrounded by people at the start would be really helpful. Love the channel.

Justin S

Hey GTN guys! Could you please do a video on where to find a coach and how to know if you need one! I’ve seen your videos on how to do training blocks and I’m just starting training. Would it be better to get a coach for now or just jump into a training block?

Donato G Poet with Pace

Can I give this a double thumbs up? ???? completed only my third session on Monday and took me a good lap to get going but once going, loved it! Completed 4 laps and felt epic!

Jonathan Corpuz

thank you for this,, ill try this session.

These triathlon swimming

These triathlon swimming clothing items may help you become a faster triathlete, but they also may make you a slower triathlete. Triathlon Taren explains why you should or shouldn't use neoprene swim shorts and unboxes some Huub triathlon suits and swimskins.

Why tuck the tri suit under the swim skin?

David kendellen

Oh yes he did....   "Toughest Mother Fu€ker"    cover the kids ears.  That 3 hours must have knocked the b'jazus out of your editing too :P

Jannik

questions:
1) what data screens do you have on your garmins both for the run and bike?
2) how do you analyze your training or measure progress?

again good luck at your race!

rmoreno94

What app do you recommend to train for triathlon? I don't know where to begin or to start a work out schedule.

Jess H

Ladies, looks like all those days of putting on a Spanx will pay off when it is time to put on a swim skin!

Allan

Hey taren, curious as to how hard you think it'll be to put on the top part of your tri suit when you're all wet

Anders Skandsen

Great videos! Just a thing reg the Huub DS suit, I had the experience of ordering a size apparently too small. Didnt feel too tight but clearly my buddy on a training ride got a better view than he thought riding behind (the stretched black fabric is quite transparent). Got two sizes larger, but still, next time I think he'll still get a fair view riding behind. You turned around to show in video quickly, but get in tt bike position and have some sunlight and you might feel "nakeder" than you thought. It's all good though :)

Stijn De Schepper

You don't have any team clothing for the race? I just ordered my first kit for my first race! I will be swimming inn a handed down wetsuit or just the teams trisuit when it's hot.

SO SO SO much looking forward to putting it on for the first time!

Also, a big shoutout to the women editing these amazing videos! Not just because it's womens day. :)

Brian Power

MOTHERFUDGECAKE !! , A curse , hell , its beats the floaty shorts shout out , looking good in the suit , Ironman getting close now :-)

Bin Sun

Hey Taren, are you allowed to only wear the red suit on this race? Because Ive heard in a non wet suit race people are not allowed to wear any cloth that covers their shoulder. Worst case, can I rolled up the sleeve in the race because that suit is the only on I have

Alexandru Necula

Loving the color of the suit, cool. But I am more curious how you are gonna get the skin out, it looks really tight. Putting it on, you figured it out, you will get help, but getting it out, are you and Nicole Walker gonna wait for each other at the transition for that?

James Swart

Have you thought about trying zone 3 kit.

Nicole Walker

I will help you into your huub if you help me into mine

Wendy Whitney

Do the girls wear the floating pants? Or something more appropriate for girls? I only ask because girl hips aren't usually quite right for dude pants. ;)

Adrien Rossignon

Any difference between the DS long course tri suit from your video and the "CORE" long course tri suit that I saw on their website as well? Cheers !!!

Just Me

I'm looking at the same DS Tri suit but was put off with how far up the back the pockets are, I like the suit it looks cool as but whats your opinion on the practicality of the pockets  ??

adrian b

Haha that was the first time I heard you curse.

woody369

Can you link to the tri-suit. Probably out of my price range but I'd like a look.

Kristian Holmgaard

What if its an non wetsuit swim

Chu Tang Clan

Your videos came on after someone elses in the background, listening to you...I noticed you were funny so loaded the tab playing (your video)...new sub! Looking forward to more and happy I have catch up stuff too!

Sam Branch

Maybe need a medium? ???

Eric Prilipp

Haha looks like the first time I put on my swim skin. I finally got it on after 10 minutes but wasn't sure it would actually zip up. I got some help from the life guard and it zipped right up!

Immer Chriswell

Before Campeche are you going to be able to get in some open water swims? And how important would you say getting practiced on those is? I went in without any practice in open water and clocked a 14:20, but with a lot of chop was totally taxed coming out.

Lesal8403

Holy crap,,,, watching the swim skin OVER the suit.. worth the price of admission... lol.. now that was funny!! Old school TT. Good times.

Paulius Sukys

size too small for swim suite:) zipper wont close or you wont be able to breath:))

lulz1978

can you do a video on bottle exchanges?

Steve Booth

What's the difference between floaty pants and a pull-buoy besides the ability to kick? Not that triathlete's are kicking much to begin with.

Chris Stanzione

Are neoprene shorts allowed in triathlon instead of a wet suit?

Scott Hughes

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'll never feel ridiculous getting into my tri suit again. You rock!

Lucas Rodrigues

I'm from Brazil, and love your videos and instagram timeline, keep up the good work on the channel!!

lexington476

...and remember red does go faster ??.

Todd Boddington

Great content. They need a lol emoji on YouTube for your channel rather then a like button ?

Jenessa Johns

Hey Now! I love my floaty pants!!

Peter Bournelis

Hi, what size is your HUUB tri suit @7:25 ?

Fwill_usa

So, is there any advantage of a one piece over two or just preference on a tri suit?

Iron Will

I've been thinking about a swim skin - though there are barely any races that I'll be doing that aren't wetsuit, so I'm not sure the purchase would be worthwhile... How did you find using them?
